Coin Sale Calendar 1997

No. 32 WEDNESDAY 29 OCTOBER No. 33 WEDNESDAY 26 NOVEMBER

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Please note that the Buyers’ Premium is now 1 7.625% including V.A.T

Lots Imported from Outside the EU

There has been considerable confusion over the recent introduction of the 2.5% import VAT on items brought in for sale from countries outside the EU and how it affects buyers within the EU. Such items are shown in the catalogue with a small ‘x’ beside the lot number. Rule number one - do not be put off ! The difference in the price you pay is minimal. The hammer price is subject to 2.5% Import VAT but the Buyers Premium is also subject to the reduced rate of 2.5% which will be shown as an inclusive figure with the premium. An imported lot therefore costs an EU buyer an extra 2.5%, or, on a £5000 lot, an extra £12.50. Buyers from outside the EU obviously do not have to pay the Import VAT so long as the item is re-exported.

FOREWORD

Our first auction of the new 1997-98 season includes a number of interesting specialist properties, along with an excellent array of ancient, British and world coins and medals.

Commencing the British hammered series is a small but select group of coins, mostly pennies, formed by Edward Breslauer, of Hamilton, Virginia, USA. This is followed by 70 late Anglo-Saxon and Norman pennies from the collection of Peter Broadley, of Bielefeld, Germany, which includes a good concentration of pieces from the York mint. Both these collections were formed through the auspices of the dealer Michael Trenerry, whose assistance we gratefully acknowledge.

Complementing these two groups is a small but representational collection of Irish hammered coins, formed in recent years by Donal Macduinnshleibhe of Dublin.

The principal collection of 19th century British unofficial farthings (1820-70), formed by Tony Pardoe of Sittingbourne, Kent, is the third important group of this material to be sold at auction in London in recent years, following the dispersals of the Ken Collinson and Robert Bell collections in 1994 and 1996. However, at 586 pieces (excluding duplicates), this part of the Pardoe collection is comfortably the largest and includes many pieces not represented elsewhere. The overall quality, too, is unmatched by any other previous such offering.

Mr Pardoe made his first purchases in 1982 and continued to buy from a wide range of dealers and private sources over the next 13 years. However, the collection assumed increasing importance with his acquisitions of the greater parts of the series of these pieces formed by Arthur Went (1910-80), through Seaby in February 1984; by Christopher Brunei (1920-89) directly in October 1985; by Roy Hawkins (1917-87), through Michael Dickinson, in April 1989; and by Denis Vorley (1915-96) directly in February 1990. Of these, the Went and Vorley pieces, notable for their overall quality, have no provenances, and those from Hawkins precious few. However, Christopher Brunei delighted in noting acquisition details and this information has been preserved by Mr Pardoe, himself a meticulous recorder of sources.

The Brunei tickets represent a fascinating trip down memory lane, recalling names of London dealers from the 1960s and 1970s, many of whom are no longer active and some sadly no longer with us. At a time when most of the larger firms tended to spurn such pieces because of their low commercial value, Brunei patronised the smaller retailers - those with stalls in the markets at Cutler Street, Portobello Road and Charing Cross which, together with early coin fairs, provided the bulk of this portion of his collection. For the record, Brunei’s sources include Alamal, Alan Darer, Alan E. Davidson and W.J. Davidson (Portobello Road), Mark Davidson, Sam Evans, George Ferguson, Fred Hancock (Amphora Coins), Ian Fine (Harrow Coin & Stamp Centre), Fred Jeffery, Ken King (Portobello Road), Ken Lovell, John Malcolm, Graeme Monk, Gordon Newman, Vic Rogers, St Martins Coin Co, Clive Sellen, Jim Strickland, Ted Swift (Planet Coins), Coin Tray, Brian Warwick and Bill Whelan.

Like Christopher Brunei and Roy Hawkins before him, Tony Pardoe was a major collaborator in a standard work on the series - in this case. Bell’s Unofficial Farthings: A Supplement, by Bell, Whitmore and Sweeney. Some of his pieces are featured on the plates of UFS, others are illustrated in the pioneering volume by Bell; all are indicated as appropriate. For the future, Mr Pardoe intends to transfer his numismatic interests to the field of ancient coins.

Within the commemorative medal sphere, we are particularly pleased to be able to offer an extremely comprehensive collection of badges, tokens and tickets relating to London stockbroking and the Stock Exchange. Formed between 1976 and 1988 by a private collector in Edinburgh, the collection spans the period from 1707 to 1980 and represents a fascinating medallic history of this famous institution.

Last, but by no means least, Jacobite medals have always enjoyed a small but dedicated following, and this auction includes 23 significant silver pieces from a private collection.

P.J. Preston-Morley

Within the Corporation of the City of London it has been the practice for over three centuries to operate a form of licensing of brokers, a system confirmed by charters and Acts of Parliament of 1697, 1707 and 1817. To qualify as a candidate for admission to the roll of sworn brokers, an applicant had to be a Freeman of the City: in other words, to have obtained membership of any one of the City Livery companies. Once he could satisfy this credential, he would be sworn in before the City's Court of Aldermen, depositing a suitable bond and sureties. Once accepted, the new broker was issued with a licence on which he had to pay an annual rent, and a badge or pass, what became known as the silver ‘broker's medal', on which his name would be inscribed, and which would provide proof of his bona fides.

The earliest medals date to the period 1697-1706, but in 1707 the complete control of stockbrokers was granted to the City, which caused the first in a series of brokers' badges to be struck. A redesign was occasioned by tbe Union of 1801. and later through the succession of Victoria to the throne. Although most 18th century badges exhibit signs of wear, those issued in the 19th century tend to have survived in unworn state, probably because the holders seldom had need to produce them to satisfy anxious clients. An .Act of 1870 restricted the powers of Aldermen and a further Act of 1884 abolished their rights, along with the registration of brokers and. consequently, the issue of badges.

Some personal details pertaining to the above pieces are:

John Adam (elected 1819. Fruit): James Thos. Jeune (el. 182.J, Drug): James William Jeune (el. 18.66. Drug): Samuel Parker Jun. (el. 1827. Patten-Maker). Petre was jailed for 9 months at the Old Bailey in 1981: he was expelled from the Stock Exchange in July of that year. His colleagues made up the £1 1.600 loss from their own funds, even though Petre had a £16.()()0 overdraft. Petre. released from prison and living in Nottingham, was adjudicated bankrupt in March 1982.

Thomas Wood, auctioneer. Bartholomew Lane: his tokens were payable at the Old Stock Exchange, the building shown on them. Wood was declared bankrupt on 8 Dec. 1813.
